Starfish on the Beach

Starfish on the Beach

Reclaimed Canadian Oregon Pine & Iroko with Stained Glass

403 x 1730 x 1055(h) mm (Adjustable Feet)

R136 000

As the name alludes, the table depicts a beach scene.  Here you can see a starfish on the beachfront, breaking waves, the deep blue sea and the setting sun on the horizon.  A flock of birds can be seen taking flight from the beach, heading into the sunset.

This scene is inspired by the tranquility I feel when sitting on the beach during sunset, watching the last of the sun’s rays reflecting on the water.  I created this table envisioning the sun shining through the stained glass and casting a beautifully coloured reflection on the ground.

Starfish on the Beach has been my most challenging piece so far.  After countless hours configuring angles and miniscule changes in measurements, this tapas table has been crafted into existence.  Reclaimed Oregon Pine might not be the ideal timber to use in the making of Kumiko, because of splintering and easy breakouts - but - it offers a timeless feel and presence.

Each Kumiko pattern used is imbued with its own symbolism –

Tsumiishi-kikko pattern (Sun): The hexagonal pattern is named for its similarity to the turtle shell & is imbued with a wish for eternal prosperity.

Tsuno Tsumiishi-kikko pattern (Starfish):  Tsuno means horn, and is associated with strength, growth and protection, reflecting a strong and resilient nature and connection to Mother Earth.

Asanoha Mon’yo pattern (Flock of birds): Named after the hemp leaf motif it resembles, it is characterized by a lattice of interlocking hexagons symbolizing longevity and good health.
