The Start – the finely handcrafted table that set my fascination with Kumiko work in motion.  This table was my very first attempt at Kumiko.

This table taught me that in order to create Kumiko, every single part of your process needs to be exact – from choosing your timber, to machining, to your angle, and measurements.  If one of these aspects are off, the pattern simply will not work.

The Start features basic Mitsu-kude and Asanoha Mon’yo Kumiko patterns as well as a square grid in a hexagon cross.

The outer circular rim is connected with four Scarf joints.  The legs of this table come together to create a grid with six points, representing kindness, strictness, balance, endurance, beauty, and leadership.  This creates a central foundation that ties everything together.
